Book an Appointment to Use Your Dental Coverage Before it’s too Late!

Fall is a time of transition. Before you leave your home, check the weather to see if you need an extra sweater or jacket (and hat and mittens). Brightly coloured leaves will give way to falling snow in no time, so be sure to bundle up!

On your way out the door, you’re probably thinking of what you need to do today. We do not like to be the bearer of bad news, but there may be one more thing to add to your to-do list – booking an appointment with your family dentist. Many patients have dental coverage that lapses and replenishes every year; if they don’t use it before the end of 2019, they could miss an important opportunity to see a family dentist.

How Often Should I See a Dentist for a Cleaning and Examination?

Seeing a dentist regularly helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. For most patients, we recommend check-ups (cleaning and examinations) every six months to promote good oral hygiene and overall health.

This is why it’s so important to align your visits to your dental coverage benefits. Most plans cover two yearly appointments recommended by most dentists, but what happens if you haven’t seen your dentist two times in the past 12 months? If you do not make an appointment by the end of the year, you may miss the opportunity to have your appointment covered by your dental benefits. Missing one appointment could lead to a pattern of not seeing a family dentist as often as you need to. Needless to say, this could have a negative long-term impact on your teeth and gums.

Why is it so Important to See a Dentist Regularly?

As the famous Benjamin Franklin quote says, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” By seeing a dentist regularly, a dental hygienist will remove any plaque or tartar on your teeth, and a dentist will examine your teeth for cavities, gum disease and other oral conditions or diseases. Prolonging a dental appointment could put you at risk for diseases or conditions with the potential to affect your dental health as well as your overall health.

The last couple of months of the year are fun, full of celebrations and, for many of our patients, an extremely busy time. Many of our patients have actually asked us to remind them before the end of the year to book a dental appointment in November and December! While this may sound somewhat comical, 2020 will be here much faster than you think.
